Our Non-Profit Transition

In May 2024, BBHH Took Exciting First Steps towards Becoming a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization

After a decade of serving our community under a variety of ownership models, we are thrilled to announce our plans to establish as a 501(c)(3) organization in order to increase long-term community impact, engagement, and sustainability. We are proud to be fiscally sponsored by the American Association of Birth Centers Foundation (AABCF) while we lay the foundation to obtain our own non-profit status.

FAQs

  • America’s current medical and insurance systems make it very difficult for birth centers to succeed financially for a multitude of reasons, the most significant being poor reimbursement rates from insurance companies for birth center services. There is also a general lack of public awareness of midwives as skilled providers and birth centers as safe options for low-risk families seeking pregnancy care.

By becoming a non-profit, we aim to increase our longterm impact through additional community visibility, engagement and support, strengthening our company in order to safeguard this unique model of care to benefit birthing people, babies, families, individuals, and our community indefinitely.

Non-profit status will enable us to apply for grants and funding designated for the non-profit sector as well as solicit charitable contributions from community members who wish to see our model remain an option for the community.

  • As a small, women-owned-and-operated business, our community birth and health center has been an important and unique asset to the greater Boulder community for the past decade, improving the quality of life for thousands. To date, we have safely welcomed nearly 1,000 babies into the world and served over 2,700 individuals and families, with some seeking out our care from as far as Nebraska (for three separate pregnancies and births!).

For low risk families, midwifery care has demonstrated superior outcomes, better patient satisfaction, and more cost savings for the overburdened healthcare system. In fact, multiple studies has shown that, if appropriately integrated into healthcare systems, midwives could address 80% of the world’s essential maternity care needs and could significantly reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality rates. • As Boulder’s only free-standing (out-of-hospital) birth center, we offer expert, evidence-based support for pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and early newborn care by Certified Nurse-Midwives and Certified Professional Midwives who work together with individuals and families to reach shared decisions that are right for them. We also proudly provide continuity of care for our clients with gynecologic and sexual healthcare as well as acupuncture services.

After reassuming ownership in Fall 2023, we introduced a newly expanded portfolio of care options to address the more comprehensive health needs of our community, including functional medicine, mental health services, lactation support, and more.

  • In May 2024, we signed a fiscal sponsorship agreement with the American Association of Birth Centers Foundation (AABCF), which sponsors birth centers planning to establish as non-profits. This agreement enables us to solicit tax-deductible contributions and apply for non-profit grants under the AABCF, while allowing us the time needed to form a strong Board of Directors and organize the requirements before filing for our own independent non-profit status.

We are looking forward to taking this next important step with our long-term commitment to improve the quality of health and healthcare for our region’s families.

  • We would be honored if you would provide a tax-deductible donation to help us meet our fundraising goal of $250,000 by the end of our tenth year serving our community. See below for details on how these funds will be used and how to make a contribution.

Our first fundraising goal is to raise $250,000 by the end of 2024 to comemmorate our 10-year anniversary. Funds raised will be used to strengthen our company in four strategic ways:

  • Establish a foundation upon which to build the birth center’s long-term success within the Boulder community as an independent, financially sustainable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a Board of Directors and fundraising capacity.

  • Provide partial funding for our operations while we wait to be reimbursed over $150,000 from two insurance companies for services we have provided since October 1, 2023. These payments have been delayed more than 7 months as a result of the transition away from the BCH system.

  • Provide essential maintenance to the birth center facility and replace some of our aging medical equipment.

  • Partially compensate our full- and part-time staff who have worked many volunteer hours to keep our doors open and survive the transition away from hospital ownership.

We invite you to support our long-standing, beloved community birth and health center as we increase our community engagement, impact, and stability by becoming a non-profit organization.

All contributions are tax-deductible and a donation receipt will be provided by the American Association of Birth Centers Foundation (AABCF).
