BBHH Doula Team Care & FAQs

  • MONTHLY: The Doula Team provides pregnancy-centered prenatal groups, where you meet with a doula or two, receive support and preparation, with the opportunity to connect with other expecting families.

AROUND 36 WEEKS: One of the doulas will schedule an in-home visit to review plans for your birth, discuss early labor comfort measures, answer questions and share practices in preparation for your labor and birth. If you live more than 30 miles from BBHH, this will be a virtual visit.

AROUND 41 WEEKS: If you are still pregnant, we offer an optional extra prenatal visit to discuss labor invitations, options, and fear clearing.

  • The Doula Team is on call 24/7 and ready with a fresh doula to support you when you are in active labor, meeting you at home or the birth center. You will have a continuous doula presence throughout your labor, birth, and two hours postpartum.

  • You will receive a postpartum visit from a doula who attended your birth, providing an opportunity to process your birthing experience, your transition, newborn care, community resources, and answer questions or concerns you may have.

  • Doulas offer non-clinical care, helping to provide a more satisfying experience as the family defines it. Care is provided in the form of:

-Comfort measures with emotional and physical support, such as guided breathing, movement, relaxation, positioning and more.

-Education for the family to make informed decisions.

-Advocacy based upon the individual family’s unique needs and desires.

  • In short, YES!

BBHH selected and partnered with the Doula Team. They trust their expertise, have witnessed their excellent care, and see how doula services benefit their families as well as the midwifery team. Midwives appreciate the wraparound care doulas provide and how they work collaboratively before, during and after birth.

Partners are the primary support. The doula's role is crucial in helping the partner to be involved in the birth by providing labor tools, suggestions and in-the-moment confidence as they guide their loved ones through pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Doulas also keeps an eye on the partner’s needs for breaks, comfort, food (and naps, as possible/needed). Ask your doula about examples of the many practical ways doulas and partners work together!

Often, it is partners who are the first to call us with the next pregnancy, as they end up valuing doula care so much!

  • Hiring a doula team vs. an individual is a personal preference. The value of the BBHH collaborative Doula Team is the unique opportunity to receive support from seasoned doula professionals, who have been specifically selected by BBHH after years of shared births have resulted in mutual trust.

In addition, the Doula Team deeply supports each other, so the doula you have at your birth can tap into the wisdom of over 100 years of collective birth experience. The doula that will be at your birth will also be well-rested and deeply present. We have found that when a doula is starting to tire, it can impact the progress of labor; therefore, having a fresh doula at the ready (if needed) supports the labor and ensures the best possible care for the family.

  • The Team shares a schedule for being on-call and does not provide visits outside the Doula Team package, nor does it take requests for a specific team member to be present for their birth. Each member of the Doula Team has been hand-selected and has a wealth of expertise to offer, and work together closely – so you have the wisdom of all the doulas with you, regardless of who is physically present in the room. We find that it is usually the exact “right” doula that is at the birth.

  • While the Doula Team has been selected by and collaborates with Boulder Birth & Holistic Health, it operates as its own independent group. Clients who enroll for Doula Team support will have complete support by the Doula Team, and should any conflict of interest arise, the Doula Team will always advocate on behalf of the client. If you have to transfer care at any point, the Doula Team remains at your side!

Doulas as an Essential Birth Team Member

This collaborative doula team offers guidance and assistance to every birthing person desiring individualized doula care to support their physiological birth. Birthing families receive integrated care from a community model of support based on evidence of best practices for overall wellbeing through pregnancy, labor, and birth to enhance birthing families’ experience while supporting the research that shows doulas are an essential part of the birth team.

Doulas have been found to:

  • Shorten labor duration

  • Decrease the use of medication / epidural

  • Increase satisfaction with the birth experience

  • Improve breastfeeding outcomes

  • Reduce mental health morbidities, such as PTSD and postpartum depression

  • Decrease healthcare disparity

  • See this 2023 study for more findings on the impact of doulas on maternal and birth outcomes

What to Expect from the BBHH Doula Team

  • Doulas attend to the birthing person's needs with hands-on mastery of physical and emotional support in preparation for and during labor and birth.

  • BBHH doulas hold all the non-medical, individualized aspects of care during childbirth and the support begins prior to arriving at BBHH for your birth.

  • In the event of a transfer, BBHH doulas will continue to support you after the BBHH midwives hand off your care to the appropriate hospital provider.

  • After birth, you will receive a home visit from the doula who attended your birth, in addition to the midwife visit focused on the medical assessment of you and your baby.
